What to Expect in Fall and Spring
Parent Orientation
Your parents or guardians play a critical role in your success in college, and through the Parent Orientation, they can learn how to best support you. Through the unique Parent Orientation, your family can take a closer look at the college application process and access in-depth information on how to pay for college, family resources, and ways they can participate in your pursuit of higher education.
FAFSA, California Dream Act, and CSS Profile Workshop
Many highly selective universities offer need-based financial aid and scholarships that make higher education more accessible. You can participate in the FAFSA completion workshop to secure funding for your college education. USC Bovard Scholars staff also provide support for completion of the California Dream Act and CSS Profile application and answer application questions involving unique family situations.
Mock College Admissions Interviews
The college admissions landscape is constantly evolving, and some schools will want to go beyond your grades and test scores to get to know you through in-person interviews or virtual interviews and even recorded videos. You must learn how to advocate for yourself in an interview and prepare for difficult questions. Mock interviews allow you to practice highlighting your unique strengths and asking insightful questions. With coaching and practice, you can confidently answer why you are a good candidate for your university of choice.
Online Essay Workshops & Essay Editing Support
Essays are a key part of the college admissions process. Depending on your college list, you will draft quite a few personal statements and supplemental essays. What matters most to you? Can you articulate how you plan to pursue your academic interests and why you want to explore them? What’s important is to draft authentic and compelling stories that represent you best. Through one-on-one meetings and online essay workshops, you can craft stand-out college essays while improving your writing skills. Coaches and essay editors are available to help with brainstorming, revising, and finalizing essays for submission.
College Application Workshops
Whether it’s the CommonApp or the University of California application, our team is behind you in reading and reviewing all parts of your application to make sure you’ve presented yourself in the best light. You will attend online application workshops to prepare for early admissions or special scholarship deadlines like QuestBridge and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship. You will be supported throughout the process of selecting college majors, securing letters of recommendation, and prioritizing items on your activities list, and even additional steps such as securing application fee waivers.
Spring Acceptance Meeting
Scholars will meet with their Admissions Coaches to go over all admissions results and financial aid packages in detail to help determine which offer to select by the decision deadline (May 1st). During this meeting in April, you can commit to a college, respond to waitlist essay prompts, connect with financial aid offices, or even discuss plans for the summer before college. Your Admissions Coach will help you get motivated for your next steps and find resources for navigating college life. To help with the transition to college, you will be connected with a USC Bovard Scholars alum — someone who was just in your shoes — to learn about the first-year experience and share tips about academic and campus resources.
